Eight people killed after terrorist Sayfullo Saipov of Uzbekistan drives Home Depot truck through bike lane
Excerpt: Eight people were killed Tuesday afternoon in a Tribeca terrorist attack as a rental truck plowed through helpless riders on a lower Manhattan bike path, officials said. Driver Sayfullo Saipov yelled “Allahu Akbar!” — Arabic for “God is great!” — after running the riders down from behind, their mangled bodies left scattered behind his runaway white pickup. The 29-year-old suspect, a native of Uzbekistan, was arrested after a hero police officer shot him in the right hip following a Tribeca crash between the truck and a school bus. Saipov, who came to the U.S. in 2010 and lived in Paterson, N.J., ...

Two Book Reviews

Book Reviews

The Enemy at the Gate; Hapsburgs, Ottomans and the Battle for Europe by Andrew Wheatcroft
This is an excellent, well-written and balanced account of the Siege of Vienna, the last Muslim crusade (until the present day) in 1683 to bring Europe from the Dar al-Harb (House of War, countries not ruled by Islam) into the Dar al-Islam (The House of Islam) by force of arms. These efforts started in the 8th century when Muslim armies conquered southern Italy, Sicily and Spain and were only turned back by Charles Martel and his Frankish knight at the 732 Battle of Tours in France. Previous Muslim efforts at had been beaten at an earlier siege of  Vienna in 1529 and at the decisive naval battle of Lepanto in 1571, when the Holy League, led by 22-year-old Don John of Austria destroyed the Ottoman fleet, ending the threat of Muslim control of the western Mediterranean. I knew the board outlines of the battle, but this volume contains rich details of both sides, including the Christian reconquista of Hungary, which had been previously conquered by the Muslims. Wheatcroft pictures it as a clash between empires, not between civilizations, though he reports that both sides were inspired by faith, the Austrians by a belief that they were defending Christianity, the Ottomans that they were following the Qur'anic injunction to exp[and the Dar al-Islam. It tells of the key roles played by Charles of Lorraine in the defense and King John Sobieski III of Poland, who lead the relief. Also the rise of a young Prince Eugene of Savoy, who became, in Napoleon's, one of the greatest commanders in history. Where are these men now that we need them?

Semantics and Communication by John C. Condon

This excellent and informative book was recommended to me by a friend, a retired Colonel of Marines. The third and, I assume the last edition was published in 1985. While a 2017 edition taking into account language changes in the last 30 years would be interesting, I would assume Mr. Condon is longer with us, as the first edition was in 1966. Nevertheless, this book is both interesting and value. It makes you think about word choice and communication styles. Two quotes from the book I thought were real keepers, "When the person, be he scholar or average person, speaks with unswerving faith in his generalization, he has abandoned the attitude of caution that characterize the scientist at work...the words "ever" and "always" do not appear in the vocabulary of the scientist." and "Adhering to official policies, fitting each unique case into a fixed set of categories, the bureaucrat is spared the necessity of coming up with fresh ideas." This book will be of special value to the writer, the professional communicator and to those in the mental health disciplines, as it deals with the intersection of words and psychology. I highly recommend it.

Excerpt: Kenya is a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and sexual exploitation. The War on Women

44 women killed in the name of ‘honour’ in Swat
Excerpt: Swat has witnessed the murder of 44 women in the name of “honour” during the current year, many of which have been concealed under the name of suicide, non-government organisation Awakening has revealed in a study. Speaking with Pakistan Today, the NGO’s director Irfan Hussain Babak said that the rate at which “honour killings” were being carried out this year had increased sharply from last year. The year 2016 had seen 53 cases of honour killings in Swat. The NGO, which works for women’s rights in Swat and provides legal aid to families of the victims, has revealed that a lot of these cases are disguised as suicides.

Bergdahl

A soldier's perspective on Bergdahl
Excerpt: rmy Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who pleaded guilty to charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, will soon face sentencing, bringing him and the Army one step closer to legally resolving the chain of events that started when Sergeant Bergdahl walked away from his unit in Afghanistan in 2009. He was captured and held as a hostage for five years; six soldiers died looking for him, according to some accounts. Sergeant Bergdahl’s case has faced politicization from both sides of the aisle. Those speaking the loudest publicly about it have overlooked the consequences that his actions had on the unit he abandoned. ... In the days following Sergeant Bergdahl’s desertion, soldiers with knowledge of the facts were forced to sign nondisclosure agreements. The truth about Sergeant Bergdahl was suppressed at the cost of their peace of mind. Though it was common knowledge inside the unit that Sergeant Bergdahl had deserted, the Army allowed the myth to perpetuate that he might have fallen behind on a patrol. Soldiers who knew the truth were afraid to speak up, out of fear that they would be punished.

Synagogue Stoned

Excerpt: Dozens of anti-Semitic incidents are recorded annually in Malmo, a city where first- and second- generation immigrants from the Middle East make up one-third of a population of roughly 300,000. Several hundred Jews live there. Fred Kahn, a former leader of the local Jewish community, told JTA that most incidents are perpetrated by Muslims or Arabs.

Trump 101

Too Many Colleges Flunk Trump 101
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/28/opinion/sunday/colleges-flunk-trump-101.html
EXCERPT: Hence the Inside Higher Ed survey's discovery of a heightened interest in applicants whose demographic and geographic profiles dovetail with those of Trump voters. If colleges are serious about the educational benefits of diversity, the thinking goes, they need to factor in those students, and they can't promote respectful, elevated debate if the campus is one big blissful love-in of like-minded liberals. Affluent teenagers from Brooklyn Heights, Brookline and Bethesda need to hear from evangelicals, from young men and women who did tours of duty in Afghanistan, from those whose relatives thrilled to Trump.

Irish Loudmouths?

Newsweek runs 'racist' op-ed asking if all 'conservative loudmouths' are Irish-American
So now we have a national magazine publish an article about how one well known subgroup are the obnoxious, biased idiots among us? I read the scholarly article behind this, and it's one of those academic exercises where the highly educated intellectual started off with a conclusion and then rolled along finding all kinds of ways to demonstrate it. Lots of examples of the ways Irish were discriminated against both in the UK and here at first, but then they "became White" and now of course have all the flaws and faults of "Whiteness". He did kind of skip JFK, and all the myriad examples of Irish contributing so much to the nation, and the Irish who were the social justice warriors of the past, like the Berrigan brothers. But let's not be picky. He also skipped the Germans who in the 1930s were pro-Nazi, the Italians famous for organized crime, the Hispanic gangs of today, and the Nation of Islam that preaches racial hatred today as well. He didn't mention how Jews make up a tremendously higher fraction of lawyers and doctors than their level in the population, or other examples of subgroups contributing either positively or negatively to the nation. This is arrogant, biased, idiot professorship at its finest, contributing to the divisiveness already far too damaging to our society. And Newsweek published it, which tells us just how bad things have gotten with the media. Heaven help us. --Del

Goldberg on RINOs

Rinos by Jonah Goldberg
But this poltroon speaks for many more sane people when he insinuates that criticizing Trump is by definition leftwing. Sasse likes to point out he is the third most conservative senator by voting record. I’m not sure how he reached that figure, but it seems plausible given that the American Conservative Union gave him a 100 percent conservative score in both 2015 and in 2016. Meanwhile, John Cornyn had a score of 71 in 2015and a79 in 2016. But, remember, Sasse is the RINO squish traitor. Ah, quoth the Bannonite mobs, but he’s thwarting Trump’s agenda! Conservatism is a dead creed. What matters now is the new nationalism and supporting our president’s pursuit of coveted wins. Nothing else matters. Well, according to FiveThirtyEight, Sasse has voted with Trump 90.2 percent of the time. He supported the Graham-Cassidy health-care bill, admittedly with reservations. But if Sasse had his way, the president would have had more than one big win by now. Likewise, Jeff Flake has voted with Trump 90 percent of the time and Mitch McConnell — that cloven-hoofed, demon-headed Mephistopheles of the Establishment — has voted for the Trump legislative agenda on 96.1 percent of his votes.

Lib Students Shout Down ... a Liberal. By Bernard Goldberg | http://www.jewishworldreview.com/1017/bernie_g101717.php3
Excerpt: Hothouse flowers threw another hissy fit on a college campus recently. But this time it was different. This time the target in their progressive crosshairs wasn't some conservative bogeyman whose views were deemed unacceptable and so had to be shouted down. This time left-wing students, at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, went after the ACLU, an organization that champions all sorts of liberal causes and no one is calling right-wing. Call me a bad person but it's fun to watch the left devour its own. And here's something else to giggle about: The ACLU speaker who was silenced by the progressive mob was on campus to speak about ... free speech on campus. (“A liberal is a man too broadminded to take his own side in a quarrel.” ― Robert Frost. With notably few exceptions such as Alan Dershowitz, liberal leaders have been AWOL opposing the anti-free speech actions of the militant left and the violence of antifa and its allies. Remember the Mensheviks? They were too reasonable and sure of themselves to effectively oppose the Bolsheviks. Yours truly, Larry Greenberg)

NFL favorability

Today, 46 percent of voters have a positive view of the N.F.L. while 41 percent view it negatively, according to new Fox News poll. Four years ago, 64 percent had a positive view of the league and 19 percent were critical.

NFL supports free speech and expression?"

In 2012 the NFL had an issue with Tim Tebow kneeling for each game to pray, they also
had an issue with Tebow wearing John 3:16 as part of his blackout to avoid glare and
made him take it off.

In 2013 the NFL fined Brandon Marshall for wearing green cleats to raise awareness
for people with mental health disorders.

In 2014 Robert Griffin III (RG3) entered a post-game press conference wearing a shirt
that said "Know Jesus Know Peace" but was forced to turn it inside out by an NFL
uniform inspector before speaking at the podium.

In 2015 DeAngelo Williams was fined for wearing "Find the Cure" eye black for breast
cancer awareness.

In 2015 William Gay was fined for wearing purple cleats to raise awareness for domestic
violence. (not that the NFL has a domestic violence problem…)

In 2016 the NFL prevented the Dallas Cowboys from wearing a decal on their helmet
in honor of 5 Dallas Police officers killed in the line of duty.

In 2016 the NFL threatened to fine players who wanted to wear cleats to
commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9/11.

So tell me again how the NFL supports free speech and expression?"

Muslim Honor Killing...in Ohio

Rocky River dad killed his daughter because of 'disrespect'
Excerpt: A Rocky River father admitted Tuesday that he shot his 27-year-old daughter to death because he felt she disrespected his rules about coming home late and failing to clean up her room. Jamal Mansour, 64, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault for the Sept. 27 death of Tahani Mansour, a pharmacist at University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center and the youngest of seven kids. ... Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Andrew Rogalski said the father and daughter had several issues with each other in the months leading up to the shooting. He said Tahani had been dating a non-Muslim boyfriend for about a month and worked to keep it a secret from her father who would not have approved.

Red America

These two related articles–the first, by Ken Stern, clearly inspired the second–both look at the forces tearing us apart politically.  Stern has clearly found there is a lot to like about red America during his year long venture to the other side.  Stern has also figured out that the bias is real; he even has an explanation for why it exists.  Stern has a book about his time in red America coming out in the next few weeks.  No doubt it will ruffle many feathers on both sides of the great divide which is probably a good thing.)  I urge you to read both these articles.  The links may not be live.  Ron P.

Former NPR CEO opens up about liberal media biashttp://nypost.com/2017/10/21/the-other-half-of-america-that-the-liberal-media-doesnt-cover/Excerpt: This may seem like an unusual admission from someone who once ran NPR, but it is borne of recent experience.  Spurred by a fear that red and blue America were drifting irrevocably apart, I decided to venture out from my overwhelmingly Democratic neighborhood and engage Republicans where they live, work, and pray.  For an entire year, I embedded myself with the other side, standing in pit row at a NASCAR race, hanging out at Tea Party meetings and sitting in on Steve Bannon’s radio show.  I found an America far different from the one depicted in the press and imagined by presidents (“cling to guns or religion”) and presidential candidates (“basket of deplorables”) alike.

Excerpt:  Journalism requires judgment. If you pick up a newspaper (pardon my anachronistic examples) and everything that’s on the front page seems boring, irrelevant, and not that important to you, you probably won’t buy it or read it. Journalists and editors need to have good acumen for what’s important in the lives of their audience and a sense of how to balance what you need to read and what you want to read. We all have a sense of how the world works, and those of us who follow politics tend to develop strong, even intense beliefs of how things are and how they ought to be. Revising those beliefs is a slow and difficult process. The Washington Post’s health-care correspondent dismissed the trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell as a “local crime story.” A Democratic senator is currently on trial in corruption, not far from the media capital of the country, with allegations of private jets ferrying the senator to party with gorgeous supermodels at lush tropical resorts and $100 million stolen from Medicare to pay for the lavish lifestyle and fill campaign coffers . . . and it’s gotten intermittent coverage at best. A longtime Democratic staffer was arrested by the FBI as he attempted to flee to Pakistan, wiping his phone of all data hours earlier. Why do reporters in the national news media find these stories . . . not quite as compelling as conservative journalism institutions? A pretty plausible theory is that living and working among so many other like-minded left-of-center people leaves them with an inaccurate perception of how the world actually works. In their minds, abortionists are dedicated medical professionals who risk death threats to provide vital serves to women, not monsters. Democratic senators and their staffers are good people, dedicated, principled, and law-abiding. Cases that contradict these beliefs are inconsequential exceptions, and not worthy of extended public attention.

Janet Jackson

If Janet Jackson had known all this, would she have married Wissam al-Mana?
Excerpt: What if someone had told Janet Jackson before she married Wissam al-Mana about Islam’s teachings about women? She probably would have denounced the truth-teller as an “Islamophobe.” Janet Jackson is now estranged from her Muslim husband Wissam Al Mana. According to insiders, Jackson began to feel “like a prisoner” in the marriage. Al Mana wanted “a traditional wife who stuck with Muslim traditions.” “Muslim traditions.” Would Jackson have married Wissam al-Mana in the first place if she had known about these Muslim traditions? A manual of Islamic law certified by Al-Azhar, the foremost authority in Sunni Islam, as “conforming to the practice and faith of the orthodox Sunni community,” stipulates: [A] woman may not leave the city without her husband or a member of her unmarriageable kin accompanying her, unless the journey is obligatory, like the hajj. It is unlawful for her to travel otherwise, and unlawful for her husband to allow her to. ( Reliance of the Traveller m10.3)

Casualty Call

Full Transcript and Video: Kelly Defends Trump’s Handling of Soldier’s Death and Call to Widow
Excerpt: A casualty officer typically goes to the home very early in the morning and waits for the first lights to come on. And then he knocks on the door; typically a mom and dad will answer, a wife. And if there is a wife, this is happening in two different places; if the parents are divorced, three different places. And the casualty officer proceeds to break the heart of a family member and stays with that family until – well, for a long, long time, even after the internment. So that’s what happens. Who are these young men and women? They are the best 1 percent this country produces. Most of you, as Americans, don’t know them. Many of you don’t know anyone who knows any one of them. But they are the very best this country produces, and they volunteer to protect our country when there’s nothing in our country anymore that seems to suggest that selfless service to the nation is not only appropriate, but required. But that’s all right . . .

Casualty Call

The doorbell rang while she was baking bread.
She glimpsed them through the window by her door,
And slid down sobbing to the foyer floor;
Until she let them in he was not dead.
Her husband came to answer it instead.
"Are you okay?" He knew. He'd been to war.
"Mother, are you okay?" he asked once more.
"I'll never be okay again," she said.
Their son was buried two weeks to the day.
The rifles fired, a bugle sounded taps.
She was clear-eyed, her husband wept. Perhaps
He knew the price that they had yet to pay.
They grieved their son for years, then cancer came,
And as he died, he called the dead boy's name.

Never Trump?

The Post-Election Twist on #NeverTrump by Jim Geraghty
Excerpt: There’s a lot for conservatives to like in the new administration: The sudden reduction in illegal immigration, the accelerating defeats of ISIS on the battlefield, the rollback of various regulations, a punitive strike on Syria for chemical weapons use, Education secretary Betsy DeVos rescinding Obama rules that undermined due process, Nikki Haley kicking tail and taking names at the United Nations, big changes underway at the Department of Veterans Affairs and of course, the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Robert Gorsuch and many fine judges in the lower circuits. If you have a 401(k), you’ve probably felt good for most of 2017. We might get tax cuts. But these accomplishments come at the cost of a president who generates his own daily distraction; who constantly responds to what’s said on cable television; who lashes out at his own cabinet; who is impatient and ill-informed about how his own government works; who is so unfocused he sometimes contradicts himself within a matter of hours; who is apparently unwilling to study the details of policy; and who sometimes throws a bone to the worst of America, as when he insisted “fine people” were among the Charlottesville protesters.
